Welcome to my latest blog post where I’m going to be dressing in different styles of clothing for every day of the week, well the working week. Sorry in advance if I label a look incorrectly because of my ignorance. I’m not trying to offend anyone here. I’m just trying to expand my horizons and try some new looks. People aren’t usually just one thing when it comes to their style. So it can be hard to put together a look that is purely boho or preppy or whatever but I’ve done my best. Watch the video version below or read on for day one.
Day 1: Boho
I started off the week with a style that isn’t really too far from my own. But I really tried to amp it up as far in that direction as I could go. To achieve my boho look I went for a natural and earthy makeup look. The same eye colours that I usually go for on my day to day. I would have gone for a lip gloss instead of a lipstick but I don’t own any anymore. I donned a long, wavy, natural wig for my hair with a flower crown headband to top it off.
This vest was probably the most boho thing in my wardrobe so I knew I had to include it in the look. I also decided on a long, floral, maxi skirt with this crochet singlet top, some ankle booties, a suede leather choker type thing and some wooden hoop earrings. My husband said, “Hot!” when I walked in this morning. I think he likes it. I really like my boho look too. As I said at the beginning, it’s not that far from my own style but I love really leaning into the boho vibes.
Day 2: Tomboy
This style is not one that I ever thought about experimenting in but I was intrigued to see how it would turn out. I decided against makeup but I thought it would be cool to try out a short wig. Jeans and a flannel seemed to be staples for the tomboy look paired with a basic tee and a leather cap. Although I do think I look more masculine/tomboy with the flannel done up. I ended up doing that while it was still chilly in the morning but had to shed the layers later in the day.
I also layered a Letterman type jacket over the top which I got from the men’s section of a clothing exchange which I frequent quite often. Sneakers are my go-to shoes option to finish off the look. This short wig really sets this look apart from my casual wear days. But I don’t think it suited me. I was kind of going for those TikTok masculine/feminine transformations but I just felt like a weirdo. It’s funny how dressing like this had me sitting differently, with my legs open.
In the end I decided my tomboy outfit either looked like Amanda Byrns from “She’s The Man.” Or like I was dressing up as a k-pop boy band like BTS. A lot of those guys have this kind of hair. When Michael (my husband) saw my outfit, his first comment was, “You look very boyish,” which is what I was going for. Then he said I looked like a high school boy because my voice hadn’t broken yet and I didn’t have a beard. It’s definitely not my style. I don’t think I can pull off the masculine vibes. Feminine vibes are more more style but it was interesting for a day.
Day 3: Preppy
I’ve done the preppy thing before when I dressed like Spencer Hastings from Pretty Little Liars, so I’m not uncomfortable with this style. For hair, I gathered it all into a high ponytail and went for a fresh, dewy makeup look. My beloved oxford shoes were pulled out once again and paired with a collared shirt, plaid skirt, black sweater and a navy blazer. I felt rather like a schoolgirl but that’s what preppy is right? To achieve that Blair Waldorf chic, I also wore a headband. Naomi said that she liked my hair but that’s the extent of the reactions.
Day 4: Girly
And for the second last day of the week another style which I pull elements from for my own day-to-day look but amped up a notch to make it as noticeable as possible. Makeup is glam and all pink hues. My hair is very similar to how I’ve normally been styling it lately but a bit more curly with a glam clip. Pink is the word for this outfit. This flirty, floral skirt seemed like a great start, followed by this ruffled lace blouse that I got from my last Shein haul. Nude, strappy stilettos were the closest to pink I could find and worked well paired with this cute, pink clutch. I wasn’t really sure which option would be the best outerwear piece but I went with my faux fur, white, fluffy coat.
I felt very overdressed for work, way too glam and over the top but it was okay. For my makeup, I also chucked on my luxe magnetic eyelashes. I felt super, super glam. Naomi’s reaction was that she liked my hair. Funny because it’s not really that different from what I normally do. I think she saw me curling it and realised I put more effort in. So she complimented me on it, which is really nice of her.
Day 5: Grunge
Now for the furthest from my style… goth, punk, alternative. I’m not really sure how to label this style. I did a heavy and intense makeup look and donned a black wig. Going the extra mile, I also put on some temporary tattoos and some fake piercings. The fake piercings were absolutely awful though. The holes were too small to put anywhere without being incredibly painful. I snapped a few trying to put them on but that turned out to be good because it made the hole opening bigger so I could get them on. They definitely looked like plastic though and very fake. The one I put in my nose made it water quite a bit. The one on my lip got caught on my teeth a few times. I don’t know how people with piercings actually deal with it on a day-to-day basis.
So my outfit was all black but I think “goth” can mean corsets, statement sleeves and ruffles so maybe this falls more into the edgy, grunge aesthetic. I saved this look for last because of the temporary tattoos. I didn’t want to have to scrub them off immediately because I actually rather enjoyed them.
This is the only style that I felt uncomfortable going out into the world in. The day was mostly spent at home but I had to go to the doctor in the afternoon and was really nervous about other people seeing me dressed like this. I wondered if people looked at me and thought, “hey, that’s a wig, those are fake” or if they just didn’t look that closely. I couldn’t tell whether people were giving me funny looks or not. Already feeling self-conscious, I didn’t want to look at them too closely because that’s even creepier.
Other than that I actually thoroughly enjoyed this look because it’s so different to my usual. I embodied this persona throughout the day with lots of moody stares whenever I passed a reflective surface. I also listened to heavier rock. I’m not really into the screamo type but I was listening to Skillet.
I especially enjoyed the tattoos. I thought about getting a tattoo for quite some time but I could never pick a tattoo that meant enough to me that, I liked enough to have it on my skin permanently. Naomi was really intrigued about the tattoos that suddenly ended up on my skin. She didn’t seem too phased by anything else. When I asked Michael what he thought of my look he said, “it’s different.” I don’t think that’s a good thing.
Day 6: Goth
And because I still had the temporary tattoos on, I tried another goth type look. This time I went for a more corseted type look with a long sleeve, mesh top and a ruffled dress underneath. I donned my military boots again and chucked on fishnet stockings. A black feathered fascinator seemed like a good accessory to add as well.
I didn’t have the beanie on the wig today so it looked a lot more fake. Pulling the front hair bits back helped differentiate the black hair from the grunge look. Despite being the furthest from my own style and despite feeling uncomfortable going out in these darker outfits, they are the most fun. What can I say, I love a good challenge and a good change even if it’s just temporary.
The wig was itchy and the corset made my back hurt so I only lasted until about 3 o’clock. I don’t know how goth people wear this all the time. They probably have regular black hair but the corset part is not comfy! It felt overdressed for just chilling at home with Naomi but at least she wasn’t scared of me. She just asked why I had gone all black. She decided to wear a black dress with me which was cute. My dad was here working on the backyard and his reaction was, “Oh my gosh! You look like a witch!” Even though it wasn’t the most comfortable outfit, I enjoyed this look as well. Change is as good as a holiday and all that I guess.
It was a fun week trying different styles but did I learn anything? Well my big takeaways were that I like feminine looks or at the very least long hair, that I really enjoy tattoos despite not wanting to commit to any and that how you dress really does change the way you act and behave! I kind of already knew all that but it’s always good to confirm it. Which look was your favourite on me? I don’t think I can pick a favourite as they were all good in different ways. That confirms to me as well that my style isn’t just one thing, it’s a mixture of styles. That’s what makes it unique and I love that! Don’t feel like you have to fit into a box just be you! And on that note, see you next time!
I think I agree with Michael. The ones closer to your normal style were best for me but good on you for trying them all. I guess there’s a little bit of each of them in us all.
Thanks for commenting! Yes I believe most people have a mixture of styles in their repertoire.
