Planning themed food for a kids birthday party is honestly one of my favourite parts of the whole process, and this construction truck party food spread ended up being such a fun one to create. There are SO many cute ways to tie construction themes into food using dirt, rocks, tools, roads and building materials as inspiration, and I tried to keep everything playful and interactive without making it overly complicated.
As always, I wanted a mix of proper food, snacks, sweets and themed drinks while still making things manageable for myself on the day. I also tried to include a few “build your own” style food stations because they work so well for younger kids and keep them entertained too.

Build Your Own Sandwich Station
For the main savoury food option, I set up a little “Build Your Own Sandwich” station which worked out really well for both kids and adults. I laid out a variety of breads and rolls alongside deli meats, spreads, sauces and relishes, plus sliced tomato and lettuce so everyone could make their own sandwiches exactly how they liked them.
Not only was this a really easy catering option, but it also suited the construction theme surprisingly well because it felt a bit like a little worksite lunch station!
Build Your Own Dirt Cups
This was probably one of the biggest hits of the party food table and honestly one of my favourite themed details too.

To make them extra interactive, I created a toppings station using yellow stackable parts bins (those little workshop organiser trays) filled with different “construction materials” the kids could add themselves.
The toppings included:
- Boulders – Maltesers
- Pebbles – M&Ms
- Rocks – Clinkers
- 2x4s – Wafer sticks
- Safety Cones – Orange Mike & Ikes
- Worms – Gummy worms
It ended up feeling like a mini edible sensory activity and the kids had so much fun customising their own cups.
Snacks & Treats
For the rest of the table, I leaned heavily into playful construction-themed food labels and simple foods that visually fit the theme.
(No) Nuts & Bolts
This was just a homemade (no) nuts and bolts savoury mix displayed in the back of a toy dump truck. There are many recipes out there for this nut allergy free version of nuts and bolts. I mostly followed this recipe using the cereals I could find in my Australian supermarket; cheerios, crispex, nutrigrain as well as pretzels. These were really tasty and more-ish.
Spare Tires
Mini Oreos served in another dump truck, which looked ridiculously cute and fit the construction theme perfectly.
Ropes
Rope lollies displayed upright in a container like coils of rope on a worksite. I found these in an American lolly shop and the kids thought they were amazing!
Wood Chips
Crinkle cut potato chips, simple but very effective for the theme!
Traffic Light Kabobs
These were fruit skewers made with:
- Watermelon
- Pineapple
- Green grapes
I used little circle cutters on the watermelon and pineapple to make them look neater and more uniform. Layered together on wooden skewers they looked just like little traffic lights. You can use whatever suitable coloured fruit you have in season at the time of your party.
Lumber Yard
For the veggie platter, I cut carrots, cucumber and celery into plank-like sticks and served them with cheese and chive dip labelled “Cement.” It was a fun way to include something a little fresher amongst all the sweets.
Drinks
For drinks, I kept things pretty simple but still themed.
I made personalised mini water bottle labels for the kids, which tied in perfectly with the rest of the construction truck party decor. You can actually grab the printable construction water bottle labels from my Etsy shop if you’re interested.
I also filled two large glass drink dispensers with themed drinks:
- Regular Unleaded – Lemonade
- Diesel – Peach iced tea
For the peach iced tea, I used the SodaStream Peach Iced Tea Zero Sugar syrup and honestly it worked perfectly without even needing to use the full bottle.
The fuel-style drink signs ended up being such a simple but effective themed detail.
Construction Truck Birthday Cake
I have to admit… I took the lazy route with the cake this year!
Instead of baking from scratch, I bought two supermarket chocolate mud cakes, one from Aldi and one from Coles purely because Coles only had one left at the time. Honestly though, they’re all pretty similar and it worked perfectly.
To make the cake larger and a little more interesting visually, I cut a moon-shaped section from one cake and attached it onto the side of the other cake for the base. Then I stacked the smaller leftover piece on top as a second level.
I wrapped Kit Kats around the outside and used chocolate icing to stick them down and create a sort of rocky cliff-face effect. Crushed Oreos became the dirt layer over the top.
For decorating, I simply used Jad’s clean mini construction trucks, traffic cones and worksite toys. On the top tier I placed a crane truck holding a printable construction-themed number 3 attached to the hook, which turned out so cute. I also scattered Malteasers around the cake to look like rocks and boulders.
Honestly, for a very low-effort cake, it ended up looking surprisingly effective and fit the construction birthday theme perfectly.
Tableware & Decor
For the table setup itself, I used construction-themed plates, cups and napkins from Temu along with black tablecloths. I then added strips of road tape across the front of the tables which instantly tied everything together visually.
I scattered Jad’s mini trucks all across the table setup too, including sitting one on top of the napkins to stop them blowing away outside.
The two larger dump trucks used for serving food were bought specifically for the party and ended up being one of the best decor decisions because they doubled as functional serving bowls.
I also added printable road signs to separate the table into sections:
- One side for the savoury “Build Your Own Sandwich” station
- One side for the sweet “Build Your Own Dirt Cup” section
The cake sat in the centre tying both sides together.
The yellow stackable parts bins used for the dirt cup toppings ended up being absolutely perfect for the construction theme too and looked like miniature workshop organisers.
To finish everything off, I created printable construction-themed food labels for all the dishes which really helped tie the entire food table together visually. This time I think I had the perfect amount of food. I invited 15 kids with their parents as well as a few extra family members and I didn’t have a ridiculous amount left over just enough leftover to know that there was indeed enough food. The construction-themed food ended up being such a fun part of the overall setup and really helped bring the truck birthday party theme to life.
