As you may know by now, I had a Frozen Themed Birthday Party for my now 4 year old daughter Naomi. I wrote all about that on the main post but this post goes into more detail about the cake that I decorated and the Frozen Party food and drinks that I served for the party. This year was the first year where I also had to keep in mind coeliac hubby who just got his diagnosis end of last year. When I pick a theme for a party I like to go all in with that theme and that includes with the food, drinks and cake! So read on for all the details about my Frozen birthday party food. You can also check out my Etsy listings for Frozen Party supplies.
Frozen Party Food
Each of the food platters I made for the party related back to the movie. I also created little food name labels to sit in front of each plate with a reference to the movie. You can get my food label printables from my free resource library if you sign up to my monthly newsletter. Majority of the food and drinks are gluten free and contamination safe barring the pretzel sticks in the Melted Olafs and on the Olaf’s Noses platter but you if you didn’t display them together it would have been fine. All cupcakes, cakes, icing, sprinkles, fondant etc. is gluten free. If this isn’t important to you though you can make them regularly.
Cupcakes
Every party has to have cupcakes right? There are multiple options you could do. I really liked these character cupcakes that make it looks like the icing is the bottom of the dress or in Olaf’s case the lower levels of snow. I made the cupcake toppers myself to go with these and glued them to toothpicks. My printer start going a little wack at the time so some of the colouring is slightly leaning more red. You could also buy edible versions of these cake toppers if you’d prefer.
For Olaf’s cupcake you use vanilla icing with a large circle tip and add two choc chips as his buttons. The issue with using buttercream is that the butter does discolour the icing. Instead of a nice crisp white that would be better for snow, it turned out a yellow colour. Hey it matched my melted Olaf’s at least! I’d suggest icing the Olaf cupcakes first, followed by the Elsa cupcakes. They also use white but instead use the star piping tip. I decorated her cupcakes with some special frozen themed sprinkles which were gluten free I bought from Bake Boss. Finish off with Anna’s dresses with the same tip but colour the icing purple. I was running a little low on icing. There isn’t as much icing as I would like on top of the cupcakes. If you have more available, use more for a more luscious look.
Melted Olaf
I did two variations of this. One with vanilla yoghurt and the other with custard. The yoghurt being white looks a lot better and more like melted snow. If I’d done it again I would have stuck to just that. The custard ones were indeed delicious though. I wish I had at least put the yoghurt ones in the see through containers instead.
To make my Melted Olafs I added in two pretzel sticks (which were incredibly difficult to find at the supermarket!), two edible eyes, 3 choc chips for the buttons and one orange Mike n Ike for the nose. This does eventually dissolve so don’t put these together until the last minute. I bought the plastic containers and spoons from Kmart. They only had one pack in stock so the rest I put in regular paper cups with bamboo spoons. I like being able to see the Olafs in the plastic containers but paper cups is the cheaper option.
Olaf’s Noses
Olaf’s Noses has got to be the simplest party food platter around! It’s literally just carrot sticks. A good choice to add for a slightly healthier option. I happened to have a capsicum dip on hand but something white like sour cream and chives would probably look best. Add your spare pretzel sticks and some crackers to the platter too as other Olaf parts.
Frozen Hearts
The frozen hearts are just strawberries cut in half with the stem cut out to look more like a heart. They are then dipped in white chocolate and frozen or set in the fridge. Super simple but very tasty! If you do freeze though the strawberry part can go a little jelly-ish when thawed again. So either set in the fridge or bring them out of the freezer last minute.
Rock Trolls
For my Rock Trolls platter, I made some hidden veggie meatballs from scratch. You can make any recipe you feel comfortable with. I like the added veggies in with all the other sugar full party options. I also think the green from the grated zucchini showing through looks like moss on the rocks and adds to the theme. You can find the base recipe I used here but I switched out the breadcrumbs for gluten free ones, used zucchini instead of kale and just used regular beef mince. Included on the table next to this platter was some tomato sauce for dipping and toothpicks to eat them with.
Snow Flurries
The Snow Flurries are just boxes of popcorn which are always popular at a party. They are also super fast and easy to make! I designed my own popcorn box to print and glue together that matched the food labels and general decor of the party. The popcorn box printables are also available from my free resource library if you sign up to my monthly newsletter.
Kristoff’s Ice
Kristoff’s Ice is just blue jelly cut into cubes. I used 3 packs of Aeroplane Jelly for the amount I had. That was set altogether in a brownie pan lined with baking paper. This made it easy to pull out and cut into cubes. Initially the cubes were solid enough to just be eaten with your fingers. As they were left out in the heat for the party they got softer and softer. Mid-way through I brought out some more paper cups and spoons so the kids had something to eat it from.
Frozen Party Drinks
There were two options for drinks at our party; Melted Snow and Glacier Juice. Glacier Juice was just a mix of whatever I could find that was blue or purple coloured mixed with some lemonade. I ended up finding the new blue Fanta and some blueberry juice. Despite it being called blueberry juice it was actually purple. I think purple was fine though as it still matched the colour theme. The Melted Snow is of course just water. I bought a 20 pack of mini water bottles from the supermarket and relabelled them with free printable labels I found here. They were the perfect size. The mini water was a little tricky to find though. It wasn’t with all the other water, in my supermarket at least. I finally found it right at the bottom on the end of a corner with other pre-packaged kids drinks like poppers.
Frozen Party Cake
This year, we didn’t have the budget to get a professional to make a cake. Seeing as it had to be gluten free, I had to make it from scratch myself. I ended up buying 3 gluten free vanilla packet mixes and making each one a different colour; white, blue and purple. The included frosting was used to stack them on top of each other. I had to use some extra butter cream to ice a base layer around the cake.
Hard Candy Icicles
Around the base of the cake and speared into the top, I used some blue hard candy made from scratch. I was a little scared to take it on but it worked surprisingly well. I followed this Youtube video if you’re interested in giving it a go and also don’t have a thermometer to use.
Fondant Snowflakes
To decorate the cake I made a variety of different sized fondant snowflakes in white and blue. I happened to already have them for one reason or another but these snowflake fondant moulds are very similar to what I had if you are looking for some. Set in the freezer for an hour or so and then sporadically sprinkle all over the cake.
Cake Toppers
The finishing touch was a cake topper of Elsa. It was a little bigger than I thought it would be but still worked well. It comes with a base but I thought it looked better without. I managed to balance it against the shards and castle. The same frozen themed sprinkles I bought for the cupcakes were also used on the cake. The other piece of the Frozen cake puzzle is the cardboard ice castle topper. You can also gain access to the SVG cut file I created for this in the free resource library. I cut 4 different colours of cardstock with my cricut and used foam squares to make it 3D. Two skewers were glued onto the back to secure it into the cake.
I hope you have all the ideas you could ever need for your Frozen party food, drinks and cake! If you have any questions for me, ask away in the comments! Check out the next post in the series about the Frozen Crafts and Games I provide at the party.
