Another performance night looms and thus another DIY project has been completed. This term the theme is Freestylers, which is a mish mash of all dance styles. The costumes vary from hip hop to jazz, Latin to ballet and ballet is the genre that my costume has been based on. The colours though are black and bright orange! Never have I seen a ballet costume that is bright orange so I created majority of the costume in black but to add the orange highlights I decided to make some Swan Lake style feathered head pieces.
What you will need:
- Feathers
- Rhinestones
- Felt
- Hot Glue Gun and Glue
- Hair Clips
- Optional Glitter
- Optional Hairspray
Step 1:
Draw out egg shapes onto the felt and cut out two pieces for the base. I printed out the shapes so as to get them both exactly the right shape.
Step 2:
Start gluing the feathers with the longest ones first and working your way out with the stem of the feathers at the fat end of the egg. I found the more downy ones look the best on the ends. Trim around the edges to ensure the egg shape. You can use hairspray to shape the feathers into the right shape. You can also add a general sprinkle of glitter to make the feather sparkle. Personally I didn’t do this because I didn’t want to have the glitter going all over the place on my costume.
Step 3:
Glue some rhinestones onto the fat end.
Step 4:
Repeat all the above steps on the second one.
Step 5:
Glue the hair clips onto the back, one on each end. These are the only hair clips I could find at Spotlight but I think smaller ones would have been easier to manage. Although I guess these ones will really fasten it to my head. At least I won’t have to worry about them falling out.
Step 7:
Fasten to your head with the fat end towards the back. There you have it, Swan Lake style head pieces!
Here is a few photos from my performance night with the whole costume so you can get the full effect.
